Luyanda Botha, the rapist and murderer of University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana, has been given three life sentences.
The convicted suspect did not show any remorse when he briefly admitted that he intended to rape and kill her.
Botha pleaded guilty to the crimes, the Cape Town high court heard on Friday morning. He entered a into a plea and sentencing agreement with the state.
"I understand the charges," Botha said softly when asked by Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe if he understand the implications of the plea.
Uyinene was a girl who played a big role in the Gender Based Violence (GBV) directed against a person who abuses their gender but unfortunately she brutally died in the arms of a man.
Judge Salie-Hlophe added five more years on Bothas sentence for defeating the ends of justice charge.
