The AmaXhosa King Mpendulo Calvin Zwelonke has died in the early hours of Thursday at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.

Nkosi Xhanti Sigcawu, the uncle of the king confirmed the passing. “I can confirm that His Majesty King Zwelonke passed on at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha about 5.30 this morning,” Xhanti, who was travelling from Durban to the Nqadu Great Place in Willowvale, told DispatchLIVE.

“We are devastated about this as the family, but we still have to meet and inform all the people close to the family,” said a distraught Xhanti.

Zwelonke had been the king of AmaXhosa since the death of his father, King Xolilizwe Sigcawu, in 2005.

The late Xhosa King Zwelonke Sigcawu was the first Xhosa king to be crowned in 50 years, in an coronation event that took place in Nqadu Great Place in the Eastern Cape.
